Why did you join Nagoshi Studio?
After three or four years of experience in consumer game development at the game company I joined after graduation, I worked in the development and operation of arcade games for about 10 years. Then Unreal Engine 5 appeared, and I sensed that the times were changing, so that’s when I decided to switch jobs. I thought about what I most wanted to do at that moment, based on my past experience, and I thought that I could get that at Nagoshi Studio. Wanting to make consumer games again, I moved to Tokyo from Osaka, where I’d lived for a long time.
What is it like to work at Nagoshi Studios?
At Nagoshi Studio, broadly experienced creators and passionate individuals are all fully committed to a single project. I thought that was a great luxury. In addition, the development budget is generous, and requests related to equipment and the environment are rarely unfulfilled. Because of that environment, I really feel that I’m able to work efficiently without wasting time. Best of all, I don’t have to worry about things that don’t matter. I would say that this is the best studio for concentrating on the work at hand.
What kind of atmosphere does the team have?
The Program Development Department has many staff members with experience working on famous titles that everyone knows from major game companies. Everyone has a wealth of experience, so even though we’re developing a completely new game, there are seldom unforeseen circumstances that no one on the team has ever experienced before. Even in seemingly difficult situations, we can often see a rough way through by applying someone’s past experience. I am encouraged by the skills and the trusting relationships that the entire team of programmers has in this area
That said, there are some who have had no previous experience utilizing Unreal Engine 5, but all of our staffs are very adaptive and it will only take them a small time to learn and master new technology.
Can you describe a time when your work feels most gratifying?
It may be a cliché, but it’s when I’m able to meet the wishes and expectations of the team. Planners sometimes consult with us about specifications, but it is not uncommon for us to begin work without a written specification in the prototype period. I think there’s room for my own ideas and preferences in the margins, and I enjoy the improvisational aspect of the work. In that kind of situation, I’m conscious of the need to make the game interesting from the player’s perspective, not for the developer’s convenience. Also, since we never know when or under what circumstances a “chemical reaction” of ideas will occur, I always keep on my toes and try to be flexible and responsive to any request.
Please give a word to those considering a career change to Nagoshi Studio.
If you like Nagoshi himself and the games he has created, this is definitely a very rewarding place to work. The development staff are provided with top-of-the-line PCs, and the studio is staffed with creators so talented that it is hard to believe that it is newly launched. It’s an experience unique to the Nagoshi Studio environment. If what you want to do matches what you can do at Nagoshi Studio, you are sure to have a fulfilling life here.
